Strategic Planning
The Upstate Institute supports capacity
building in the region by encouraging
participation in a strategic planning
initiative. This program, open to both
Colgate students and community
organizations, provides an introduction
to strategic planning as an important
organization function. Through the program,
community partners build their internal
capacity regarding knowledge of planning and
take steps to directly influence their
organization's clarity of purpose and
achievement of goals.
Strategic planning is an essential skill for
any organization. Decisions on a daily basis
affect change on the organization. Well
thought out goals and specific plans can
guide those decisions to improve
effectiveness.
The program consists of a series of
workshops that allows partners to gain
skills and leave with an action step in hand
to implement. Community partners gain
understanding of the iterative process of
planning, be prepared to hold strategic
planning sessions, and have sufficient
skills to engage in planning in future
years. Students examine the
complexities of working with divergent
views, learn about real world applications
of theory, and gain insight into the highest
levels of not for profit management.
The workshop series
includes sessions on:
-
An introduction to
strategic planning
-
Decision-making and
stakeholders
-
Governance and
financial considerations
-
Programs, volunteers
and external needs assessment
The Strategic Planning
course has been completed for the fall of
2009. Please contact
Julie
Dudrick, project director, for more
